　　新SAT写作范文Sample Writing

　　In the article “A call for National Service” published by Washington Post, E.J. Dionne Jr. makes a point that American young citizens are supposed to do more public services for awakening the sense of responsibility, no matter which race or background they are. By the end of this piece, the readers will find themselves nodding in agreement with what author says willingly. E.J. Dionne Jr, like any good writer, employs tactical reasoning and persuasive devices, like allusion, anecdote, quotation and the choice of word, to plead with the audience to take his side.

　　Firstly, author begins his argument by indicating alluding some original texts from well known Declaration of Independence in the first two paragraphs. As is described in this document, anyone has rights to chase deserved liberty, happiness and life, when he or she is born. Besides, we should spare no effort to defend these rights. Indeed, the reason why writer employs the device is that it can effectively arouse more introspection concerning citizens’ responsibility endowed by historical documents and remind people not to forget the pledge they should abide by. Moreover, it can pay the way for a series of social problems needed to be mentioned in the following paragraphs.

　　Apart from the utilization of allusion, the strategy writer applies also includes anecdote. In the sixth paragraph, author mentions that in last summer, the Aspen Institute organized “Franklin Project”, which aimed at advocating more American adolescents to join in some public services in army, health care and the impoverished for nation. Indeed, this strategy creates an enormous connection for the audience, which can construct a sentimental common ground for readers to coincide with the author’s claim that doing public service is rather imperative for youth.

　　E.J. Dionne’s argument is also furthered by his use of quotation said by some renowned figures in the 9th paragraph. By citing a quotation from McChrystal, a retired U.S. Army General, who states, “We’ve a remarkable opportunity now to move with the American people away from an easy citizenship that does not ask something from every American yet asks a lot from a tiny few.”, author is able to build his point with the agreement of a respected individual. Virtually, the merit of quotation is further illustrating the reason why American civilians should engage in volunteer activities. Needless to say, the saying from authority McChrystal grants the argument a sense of credibility and authenticity.

　　Moreover, the choice of word also contributes to an exceptionally well-written argument. Specifically, in the 10th paragraph, authors selects “transformative” not “change “ to label public service, which can serve a function of emphasizing the great significance at the aspect.In the conclusion paragraph, author also chooses some words, like”poisonous”,“unavoidable” ,“hidden”, “unalienable”. This strategy is definitively an appeal to pathos, spurring some kind of response among readers and arousing the sense of responsibility.

　　To put it in all, the usages of allusion, anecdote, quotation and the choice of word have colored the author’s articles. Once readers read the piece, they’ll be nodding along in accordance with author.
