　　The building starts to rumble as flecks of paint and dust puff out from the walls and form a hazy cloud of debris. The lights flicker rapidly, eventually settling on darkness as people start to panic. Screams echo about as you look for the exit, the universal sign of a green man running into the light for escape. Photo-luminescent emergency exit signs and exit path markings saved 16,000 lives of those who had been in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. Ever since, International Building and Fire Codes have changed to adopt photo-luminescent path marks in emergency exit stairwells in all buildings over 22 meters in height.

　　As he watched the news of September 11th, 2001, Kim Nam Ho was struck by the power of this glowing substance that saved thousands when modern electricity failed. “I furiously researched what this substance was. I felt I could channel the energy of the universe, a message from the heavens through the medium of this light.”

For about 10 years, I studied the substance extensively. In 2009, I invented different colors of this material that would glow in the dark.” Kim realized then that he was the only person on the planet who worked with this specific material.

　　“Other painters are like cooks who go to the supermarket when they need soy sauce. They buy pre-existing ingredients and make their fantastic supper. I, on the other hand, searched for a very rare bean, and spent years making different iterations of my own soy sauce until I had different flavors and colors. Each and every time I cook, I need to prepare my own soy sauce. Except my soy sauce is the material I use to paint. It is my secret.” Kim speaks with pride, and almost a sense of responsibility.

　　“When people look for the light of emergency exits in disastrous scenarios, it is a literal life line for those in danger. I want to make art that could offer that kind of spiritual solace for people who are struggling.”

　　“I learn from how [each of my works] affects people, what they feel when they see the work in light and in the dark. I am constantly tuned into this human to human communication.” With a wistful glance at his own collection, he notes, “I am also trying to be the communicator of the messages I feel from God.”

　　Kim himself paints from a place of religious belief but does not confine his audience into the realm of the spiritual. His abstract musings are as much about the metaphysical universe, as it is about the inner feelings of a person. At first glance, one can see figures outlined by white light, and at another, see clouds of color whisper along the surface, beckoning you in for a third.

　　“When you observe my paintings for a long time, you will recognize that it is constantly moving.” Throughout the day, the material reflects the steady lack of light in its surroundings and changes in color, until it carries an entirely different attitude at nighttime.

　　Kim was a professor of communications design at a prestigious university in Korea for 25 years before he turned a full-time artist about three years ago. “I worked with developing brand identities and corporate identities, and thus, had always studied symbols and what they represent. This, in addition to my childhood interest in astronomy, space, and the universe, inspired me to explore constellations and what they could represent in my artwork.”
