主题:被发现的坟墓是否属于 King Raedwald

1. in 1939 an archaeological excavation in southeastern England revealed grave dating to the seventh century C.E. The grave contained a 13-meter-long ship filled with jewelry and other precious objects. The presence of such impressive artifacts made it likely that the person buried in the grave had been one of the kings who ruled the region known as East Anglia. While it has long been unclear which East Anglian king this was. most historians now believe that the grave belonged to King Raedwald.

1. First, the dating argument. lt's actually not easy to pinpoint the exact dates of the objects and events the passage refers to. Take the date of King Raedwald death. lt's true that one historical record suggests it was 624. But there is another source that places his death 25 year earlier, and the dating of the coins is somewhat uncertain as well. Recent analysis puts the dates of the coin several years after the date of King Raedwald's death proposed in the reading, so we cannot really match the objects in the grave with the date of King Raedwald death very accurately.

2. Second, the grave is so grand and the objects it contained are so splendid that it appears that the person buried in the grave was particularly powerful king. This also fits with what is known about King Raedwald. Raedwald was more powerful than East Anglian who kings came before and after him: in fact, Raedwald was so powerful that kings from other regions of England paid him tribute and were subject to his rule.

2. Second. we cannot really say whether the grave was truly exceptional. That's because there are almost no well-preserved graves from that period we can compared to. Only a small number of graves from that period have ever been found. And it's clear that many precious objects were removed from those graves by robbers over the years. So, while this particular grave seems impressive, we don't really know whether it was more impressive and more splendid than all other graves at the time. So, we cannot be sure it was a grave of a king who was more powerful than the other kings

3. Third, Raedwald was the first East Anglian king to convert to Christianity: earlier East Anglia kings were adherents of other religions. The grave contains silver bowls accompanied by two spoons; the spoons are engraved with "Saul" and "Paul" the two names of one of the most famous early Christians who was a convert himself. These artifacts seem to symbolize King Raedwald's own conversion to Christianity.

3. Third, we cannot even be sure that the person buried in the grave was Christian. Burying a person with a ship and precious possessions was not a Christian burial practice, but a practice associated with earlier non-Christian kings. And those spoons engraved with Christian names don't necessarily mean the king was Christian himself. Maybe he just received the spoon from a Christian individual as a gift. And they ended up in graves because they were made of silver or more valuable.

学术讨论

Your professor is teaching a class on sociology. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.

  In your response, you should

  · express and support your personal opinion

  · make a contribution to the discussion in your own words

An effective response will contain at least 100 words. You have ten minutes to write.

Doctor Achebe:This week, we will discuss different approaches to teaching children financial responsibility, some parents give their children a weekly allowance to help them learn money management, while others believe it has no real benefit and may lead to bad habits. Which approach do you think is better for a child's development, and why? Please explain your reasoning.

Kelly: I believe children should receive an allowance because it helps them put their math skills to use. By managing their own money, they learn how to budget, save, and make spending decisions. For example, if they want to buy something expensive, they have to figure out how long it will take to save enough.

Paul: I'm against giving children an allowance because it can create conflict within families, for instance, if a child learns their friends receive more money, it could lead to resentment or arguments at home. Rather than fostering financial responsibility, it might cause unnecessary friction.

  范文:

From my perspective, parents are supposed to give children allowance, since it can largely ensure children are capable of developing the ability to manage money at a young age. Undoubtedly, if children cannot resist the temptation to allocate the money to snacks or video games initially, they might have no spills to pay for the entertainments in the following days. For instance, since I was five, my parents insisted on offering me allowance to encourage me to arrange my daily expense independently. Clearly, after a couple of failures in pouring all the pennies on favorite toys but running into embarrassing situation of lacking necessary money for sandwich, I decided to use my allowance wisely. Consequently, after some tryouts, I eventually had a clear mind to arrange each dollar to help me make a living while purchasing stuff required in my daily life.
