主题:methods for reducing heating cities
One popular idea is to install plants on the roofs of buildings. In parks, plants naturally cool the air around them as a result of certain life processes. They also provide shade. The expectation is that when grown on the tops of buildings, plants will cause the roofs to be significantly cooler for the same reasons. Just like parks, where plants provide shade and cool the surroundings, "green roofs" will help lower urban temperatures. |
能够适应屋顶恶劣环境(强风、浅土层)的植物种类非常有限,而这些特定物种并不像普通植物那样具有明显的冷却空气的效果 |
Another approach is to replace the materials ordinarily used to pave roads and sidewalks with materials that absorb water from rainfall. Ordinary paving materials do not soak up rainwater, so water flows away into gutters instead. Water-absorbing pavements, on the other hand, have many tiny holes that hold on to rainwater. When hot air causes this retained water to evaporate, the paved surfaces and the surrounding air grow cooler. So, cities with water-absorbing pavements will be significantly cooler. | 在干旱少雨的气候下,透水路面大部分时间没有水分可蒸发,其多孔结构反而增加了受阳光照射的表面积,导致其比普通路面吸收并保留更多热量 |
Finally, some experts believe that cities can be made cooler by creating new, denser urban areas that discourage people from using cars. If new urban areas are built with larger, taller buildings that can house more people and businesses, distances that people have to cover to visit another person or a business will be shorter. As a result, it will be more practical to travel by foot or by bicycle than by car. With fewer motor vehicles in use in dense urban areas, there will be less heat and exhaust, leading to lower temperatures overall. |
虽然汽车热量减少了,但密集的人口本身会产生大量体热。在紧凑的城市空间中,这些人体热量会聚集起来,其增温效果与在分散城市中汽车产生的热量大致相当 |

Your professor is teaching a class on sociology. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.
In your response, you should
· express and support your personal opinion
· make a contribution to the discussion in your own words
An effective response will contain at least 100 words. You have ten minutes to write.
Doctor Achebe:When people are choosing a career, there are many different factors to consider. What aspects of a job do people value most? Salary is a possible factor. These days, with work environments evolving, human interaction might be an important factor. lf you had to choose, is it better to have a job with a high salary but little or no human interaction, or a job with a lower salary that allows for regular interaction with colleagues or customers? Why?
Kelly:In order for people to be truly satisfied with a job they need validation. This can only come from frequent and productive interaction with coworkers who acknowledge their hard work and contributions. l think everyone is looking for a job where they will receive positive feedback from their colleagues and recognition for their achievements.
Paul:I think that salary is the number one factor in determining whether a certain job is good or not. In any job interview, the first question many of us, including myself, really want answered is how much the job pays. Being a practical person, l would say the purpose of work is to earn money, not to socialize with others.
范文:
While a high salary is undoubtedly attractive, I firmly believe that a job fostering regular human interaction, even for a lower salary, provides a superior and more sustainable quality of life. The profound benefits for mental well-being, professional growth, and long-term career resilience far outweigh the immediate financial gains of a solitary, high-paying role. First, regular social interaction is a fundamental component of psychological health, which is a form of compensation in itself. Humans are inherently social beings, and the workplace is a primary source of community and cognitive stimulation. A role that isolates an individual, such as remote data entry or overnight IT monitoring, can lead to feelings of loneliness and stagnation, which may ultimately necessitate spending that high salary on countering these negative effects. In contrast, the daily camaraderie, shared challenges, and sense of belonging found in a collaborative environment provide intangible rewards that directly contribute to life satisfaction. Furthermore, from a professional development standpoint, interaction is the engine of growth. Colleagues and customers provide a constant stream of new ideas, alternative perspectives, and constructive feedback that solitary work inherently lacks. For instance, a marketing manager earning slightly less but working in a dynamic team will continuously refine their skills through brainstorming sessions and client negotiations. This collaborative synergy fosters innovation and hones interpersonal skills like empathy and negotiation—abilities that are not only vital for leadership roles but are also largely immune to automation, thereby future-proofing one's career in a way that a narrow, isolated technical role cannot. Admittedly, a high salary can alleviate financial stress and provide security. However, if that financial comfort comes at the cost of daily isolation and a stunted professional network, it can be a pyrrhic victory. The skills and relationships built in a socially engaged role often lead to more diverse and resilient long-term opportunities.
In conclusion, the choice extends beyond mere salary. A socially integrated career nurtures both the person and the professional, building a foundation of well-being and adaptable skills that a large paycheck alone cannot guarantee.

Doctor Achebe:Let's continue talking about consumer behavior. We have been discussing different ways people go about choosing what products to buy, and there are many potential sources of information and advice for consumers. in your opinion, which is the better strategy for making purchasing decisions, relying on advice from friends and family, or depending on information from online sources? Why?
Kelly:Asking friends and family members for product recommendations might seem like an easier option, but it might take too much time to get all the information you need. An internet search would be much more efficient. There are many consumer magazines available online that compile lots of data to compare the advantages and is advantages of one product versus another.
Paul:The last time l bought a computer, l just watched a few videos online to make a decision, and now l regret that. My friends could have advised me better because they know my preferences and the kind of features that l am interested in. Consumers should get advice from the people around them to find the most suitable products.

主题:advantages offered by crew-less cargo ships
Crew-less cargo ships will be cheaper to operate than traditional cargo ships. Hiring an onboard crew to operate a traditional ship can cost approximately $3,000 to $4,000 a day. However, crew-less ships can sail on their own. Various technologies on board replace the crew that normally operates and guides a ship. Without the expense of a crew, crew-less cargo ships will save companies money and perhaps lower shipping costs. |
To begin with, these crew-less ships probably won't save companies. You see, crews are actually very valuable because they can perform maintenance on ships while they're out at sea. Whereas crew ish ships can only have maintenance done once they're in a port. So a crew-less ship has to spend extra time in port having maintenance work. And while it's in port, the ship can't earn money by shipping goods. So the ship's owner loses money. |
In addition, crew-less cargo ships will be less vulnerable to piracy. If pirates board a conventional ship, they can force the crew to give them control of the ship and allow them to steal the valuable cargo on board. A crew-less cargo ship, however, would not have a crew to intimidate and could be designed so that it would be very difficult to board at sea. Even if pirates did manage to get onto one of these ships, they would not be able to alter its course, as there would be no onboard controls that humans could operate. |
Although it's true that there would be no controls on a crew-less ship for pirates to use. There would still be ways for them to steal these ships. While crew-less ships would be largely autonomous, capable of navigating without direct human intervention. The ships would still need to receive occasional transmissions from people on land. Such as software updates for the navigation technology. In the future, computer pirates known as cyber pirates could take advantage of this and find a way to take control of ships simply by transmitting alternate instructions to them. So they could steal a crew-less ship by forcing it to change course. Possibly without even being near it. |
Lastly, these crew-less cargo ships will be involved in fewer accidents than traditional cargo ships. Each year, hundreds of cargo ships around the world are damaged or destroyed in accidents- fires break out in engine rooms, and ships take on water and sink when they tip over or get their hulls damaged. Research indicates that these accidents are primarily caused by human error, often because of tired or distracted crew members. Crew-less cargo ships are not prone to such errors and will therefore be much safer than traditional cargo ships. |
And finally, sure crews can cause accidents when they're tired or distracted. But they can also prevent accidents when technology fails. For example. Ships use sensor technology to avoid striking objects like other ships and icebergs. This technology can be disrupted by high winds and other weather conditions. IFA crew is on board. They can spot objects in their path. But a crew-less ship, unable to detect these objects under certain conditions. Might continue its course and cause a serious accident. Because crew ships don't have people to rely on when technology fails, they could actually end up causing more accidents. |

Doctor Achebe:This week, we are going to discuss charitable work and community service: ordinary people volunteering their time to help their communities. Charitable or community-support activities range from cleaning up neighborhoods to running youth clubs or caring for older people. But many communities experience a problem: there are not enough people willing to do charitable or community work. What it one good way to encourage more people to do charitable or community work? explain your choice.
Kelly:Others might disagree, but I think one way to get more people to do charitable work is to pay them for their time. Even a small amount that a charitable organization coordinating the work could afford would help. l think younger people in particular would be more willing to participate if they could earn a little money.
Paul:I'm not sure l agree with Claire. People should participate because it is the right thing to do, not because there is a financial reward. Maybe the solution is in making people understand how important community work is. lf people have a better understanding of that, they will be more willing to do their part.
