　主题：the use of traffic cameras has several disadvantages and limitations

　　First, the strategy of replacing real traffic officers with traffic camera has a serious disadvantage. When human officers detect instances of dangerous driving, they can immediately intervene by stopping the driver and issuing a fine. When the traffic camera system is used, however, it might be several days, or even weeks, before the driver is notified of the violation. In other words, unlike the officers, the cameras cannot stop dangerous driving behavior when it occurs.

　　Second, cameras do not really help solve an important problem: drivers often do not follow traffic rules if they know they are not being monitored. When a road is monitored by traffic officers, drivers obey rules only on those stretches of the road where the officers are present. Similarly, with traffic cameras, drivers obey rules only in areas where the cameras have been installed. In other words, traffic cameras do not motivate drivers to obey traffic rules any more consistently than officers do.

In fact, accidents in which one driver hits the back of another's car have increased15 percent at intersections equipped with traffic cameras.

　　Doctor Achebe:Today, we will discuss an important issue related to the environment and transportation. Airplanes are convenient but cause significant air pollution, especially on short flights, which use more fuel per mile due to frequent takeoffs and landings. On the other hand, trains are a greener option and are becoming more popular and widely used in many regions. To begin our discussion, I'd like you to discuss: should short flights (2 hours or less) be ban where trains are available? Why or why not?

　　Kelly:I think short flights should be banned. If we ban them, more people will take trains, making the railway busier and encouraging the government and businesses to invest in improvements. Trains will become faster and more comfortable. This way, more people will choose to travel by train, which is better for the environment.

　　Paul:Well, banning short flights might seem good, but it can cause problems. Not all places have good trains, and improving them takes time and money. Some places are hard to reach by train, so flying is necessary. Without shorts flights, travel could become difficult, and this is inconvenient and disruptive.

For instance, a short flight from Paris to Bordeaux emits approximately 10 times more CO2 per passenger than a high-speed train journey covering the same distance. By mandating a shift to rail travel on these viable routes, governments can achieve immediate and substantial progress toward their climate goals. This is not a theoretical benefit; France's recent ban on short domestic flights where sub-2.5-hour train alternatives exist serves as a pioneering real-world model for this very approach. Furthermore, the argument that such a ban is purely punitive overlooks the long-term societal and economic advantages. Investing in and prioritizing rail travel stimulates the economy by creating jobs in railway operations and infrastructure. For passengers, city-center to city-center train travel often proves more efficient than the arduous process of airport security checks, boarding, and then transferring from a distant airport. While a flight might have a shorter airborne time, the total door-to-door travel duration is frequently comparable, if not shorter, by train. The enhanced comfort—with space to work, reliable Wi-Fi, and significantly less stress—is an added bonus that increases overall productivity and passenger well-being. Admittedly, critics argue this could hinder business travelers who value speed. However, this concern can be mitigated by reserving a limited number of short-haul flights for critical connections to major long-haul international hubs. The goal is not to eliminate all air travel but to target the most egregiously inefficient and environmentally damaging segments. In conclusion, from an environmental, practical, and forward-looking economic perspective, phasing out short-haul flights in favor of rail networks is not just advisable but essential. It represents a smart, sustainable policy for the future of transportation.

　　First, bringing wind turbines to the Great Lakes would have great benefit for the local economy. Installing just a few hundred turbines in the lakes would create tens of thousands of jobs in the area. One Canadian province bordering a lake estimates that this would add several billion dollars to its economy over a ten-year period.

　　Second, the Great Lakes, precisely because they are freshwater lakes, have an advantage over other places where wind turbines are used. In freshwater lakes such as the Great Lakes, corrosion to the turbines is not an issue, so maintenance costs would be kept low.

Currently, coal and natural gas power plants use billions of liters of water from the Great Lakes as part of the process by which they produce power. Please share your insights on this matter, considering the potential effects on a child's cognitive growth.

　　Kelly:We should not allow young children, especially those under two years old, to watch videos. It's critical for the development to engage in real-life communication with others during this critical period. Watching videos doesn't provide the opportunity for meaningful interaction. Even for older children, it's essential to prioritize physical activity over extended screen time. Instead of siting still in front of screens. they should be encouraged to stay active to support their overall well-being.

　　Paul:I agree that very young children shouldn't be exposed to videos. Forever, I believe that older children can benefit from watching certain videos, especially those that showcase animals or provide unique insights not easily encountered in everyday life. These videos can be educational and expand their horizons by offering a window into experiences they might not otherwise have access to.

　主题：several fators threaten to destroy Pompeii and Herculaneum

　　One problem is wild birds damaging works of art contained within the towns' structures. Ancient Romans created paintings on walls, and the as hovering Pompeii and Herculaneum preserved the paintings in excellent condition until the 1700s. However, now that the towns have been excavated, bird such as pigeons gather on the towns' walls and leave droppings. The droppings are acidic and cause paint to deteriorate, damaging their replaceable wall paintings.

　　First, some archaeologists have proposed a clever way of protecting the ancient works of art from damage caused by pigeon droppings, birds of prey such as hawks hunt other birds. Now hawks can be trained by human trainers. The trained hawks could be brought to Pompeii and Herculaneum on a regular basis. Once there, the hawks would fly around the area, establishing a territory. When pigeons noticed that hawks are present at these sites, they will be too afraid to stay there and will avoid the sites.

　　A second problem is damage caused by human tourists. Most tourists are respectful about preserving the sites when they visit, but less responsible tourists deliberately steal chunks of the ancient walls to take home as souvenirs. Others write graffiti on the towns' buildings. Both sites have security guards, but there are not enough of them to monitor all the tourists. Hiring enough guards to protect every wall and building would be impossibly expensive.

　　Second, there is a more affordable way to monitor tourist activities than hiring additional expense of security guards. All around the world there are history enthusiasts, people who just love history and are willing to do educational work at historical sites for little or no money such enthusiasts could be hired very inexpensively in great number for Pompeii and Herculaneum. They could serve as guides, act out scenes from the daily lives of ancient Romans or do other educational work. And here's the key these same enthusiasts educating the public could also keep a watchful eye on tourists to help prevent theft and graffiti.

　　Third, the buildings of Pompeii and Herculaneum have experienced structural failures. Although many of the buildings remained standing under the ash for nearly 2,000 years, they began to collapse when the ash was removed. In the early 1900s, engineers tried to prevent building collapses at these ancient sites by installing cement supports. The supports, however. have not worked well, and the structures continue to fall down.

　　Third, earlier attempts to build support for the collapsing buildings were unsuccessful, but today's engineers know why. The cement supports used in the early 1900s actually contributed to the problem instead of preventing it. This happened because the cement used to build the old supports contained harmful chemicals. When the cement got wet, the chemicals were transferred to the ancient walls, which damaged those walls. Fortunately, engineers are now removing the old low quality cement supports and replacing them with new supports that have a much safer chemical composition.

Please discuss the following question: ls it better for new businesses to hire experienced veterans of the industry or to staff the business with younger employees who are right out of university? Why do you think so?

　　Kelly:think a company should staff a business with the most experienced employees possible. lf you're starting a new business, you need people around you who know what they are doing and can quickly get the business up to speed. Spending time training inexperienced people will slow you down.

　　Paul:I understand what Claire is saying, but if you are starting a new business, you want people who are particularly enthusiastic and energetic. Who better than a recent graduate to bring those qualities to the job? You would be guaranteed an ambitious hard worker.
