 主题:it was the impact of humans that brought about the bird's extinction

  

  First, it needs to be kept in mind that the dodo was not only flightless, it was defenseless. The bird had not evolved behaviors of escape, hiding, or attack because it had no predators. So when predators did arrive in the form of humans, the dodo would have been extremely easy prey. And the dodo would have been a ready source of meat for humans—virtually the only one on an island that had no indigenous mammals other than bats. Given these facts, it would not have taken long to hunt the dodo to the verge of extinction.



  First. The idea that the poor, defenseless dodos were added to the brink of extinction by hungry settlers. Well, people have assumed that, you know, it sounds reasonable. But it turns out not to be true. Excavations of sites occupied by the Dutch settlers have uncovered no dodo bones. In fact, the Dutch name for the dodo means disgusting bird in reference to the fact that dodo meat was tough and unappetizing.


 

  Second, the dodo was a forest bird whose habitat was largely destroyed by the invading humans. Once the Dutch settled the island, extensive areas of forest were cleared for farming. With the destruction of the forests, the dodo would have been deprived of both food and shelter, making its extinction the inevitable conclusion for a population already greatly reduced by hunting.


  The dodo did not become extinct because its forest habitat was destroyed by the settlers farming. When the last dodo was cited by Dutch settlers in sixteen sixty-two. The forests of Mauritius have not been significantly cut back yet. Eventually, settlers did get around to cutting down the forests. That's true. But by that time, the dodo was already extinct.


  

  Finally, archaeological evidence shows that the dodo had lived on the island for thousands of years before humans arrived. It is clear, then, that Mauritius offered a favorable and stable environment for the dodo and that the species would have continued to survive on the island had things continued as they had been. But that was not to be. Humans arrived and within a few decades the dodo was extinct.


 

  Third, and finally. The archaeological record indicates that Mauritius was not as favorable to the dodo's continued existence as the reading suggests. Recent excavations have uncovered a rich deposit of fossils that includes the bones of many dodos and other animals. Apparently a sudden natural disaster, A flood or a cyclone, killed a large proportion of the island's animals about a hundred years before humans came to Mauritius. Obviously some dodos survived into the settlement period. But the bird had already become so rare that it was probably destined to become extinct even without human intervention.

Now, though, some people advocate a shorter workweek: a four-day workweek with no decrease in workers' pay. There are advantages and disadvantages to this, of course. What is your opinion about instituting a shorter, four-day workweek, and why?

  Kelly:I like that idea, but on one condition: that the workday is no longer than eight hours. l have heard some plans require ten hours a day for a four-day week. Most employees would find that exhausting, and it could actually be counterproductive to tire out your workers. Yes to four-day weeks, but no to ten-hour days!

  Paul:In my country, the workweek is Monday to Friday plus half a day on Saturday, so moving to a four-day workweek would be too drastic a chance! Workers might struggle to complete their tasks in a four-day workweek. lt seems less stressful to spread work out over more days rather than trying to condense it all into a shorter week.

  I am a staunch advocate for instituting a four-day workweek. While transitioning to this model presents logistical challenges, the profound benefits for employee well-being and sustained productivity far outweigh the initial hurdles, ultimately creating a more efficient and humane modern economy. The most compelling advantage is a significant boost in productivity that counters the intuitive fear of lost output. Empirical evidence demonstrates that after a certain threshold, extended working hours lead to diminishing returns due to cognitive fatigue and burnout. A shorter workweek forces a focus on deep, prioritized work. For instance, a landmark trial in Iceland, where workers shifted to a 35–36-hour week, found that productivity remained the same or improved in the vast majority of workplaces. Employees, incentivized by a three-day weekend, become more focused and efficient during their four days on the job, often eliminating unnecessary meetings and procrastination. Furthermore, the positive impact on mental and physical health cannot be overstated. The extra day off provides invaluable time for rest, personal pursuits, and family, leading to a more rejuvenated and less stressed workforce. This isn't merely a perk; it's a critical investment in human capital. Companies like Microsoft Japan, which piloted a four-day week, reported a dramatic 40% increase in productivity alongside a sharp reduction in electricity costs and employee stress leave. This proves that the model reduces burnout, which is a major drain on corporate resources and healthcare systems. A happier, healthier employee is simply more engaged, creative, and loyal. Skeptics rightly point to difficulties in customer-facing industries. However, these can be mitigated through staggered shifts, cross-training, and leveraging technology. The goal is to re-engineer work for effectiveness, not merely to compress five days of inefficiency into four. In conclusion, the four-day workweek is a forward-thinking policy that aligns with the realities of the 21st-century knowledge economy. By prioritizing output over hours logged, it fosters a virtuous cycle of enhanced well-being and sustained performance, benefiting both individuals and institutions alike.

But other managers do not allow flexible schedules, arguing that they create problems. In industries where flexible work schedules are possible, do you think they are a good idea? Why or why not?

  Kelly:Flexible schedules are a good idea. For example, they could eliminate the problem of employees being late to work. If people begin work when it best suits their schedule, not only will this benefit the workers, but there will also be no need for supervisors to check every day if all the workers are "on time. Everyone will benefit.

  Paul:Claire makes an interesting point, but l'm not convinced. What if the employee's clients or colleagues need access to the employee? lf an employee is unavailable at a time of day when most people are doing business, that might be inconvenient and even frustrating for others. That could harm work relationships, which would not be good for the company.
