  TASK 1

Children learning to play musical instruments often want to stop taking music lessons because they don't like to practice. Some people think that children should be made to continue taking lessons. Others think that children should decide for themselves whether or not to continue. Which view do you agree with?

  Sample Answer

Well I definitely think that children should decide on their own. The reason is quite obvious: why make children do something that they have no interest in at all? Especially when this course doesn’t benefit their overall academic performance. When there is no interest, there will not be any motivation. Plus, not all kids are born to be artistic. I understand why learning musical instruments helps children to build up a sense of art appreciation, but for those who are better at sports or math, it is nothing but a waste of time. They might as well spend more time on the stuff which they have passion for.

Your university is planning to require all first-year students to take a class in which they would learn how to use the resources available at the university library and apply those skills in writing a long research paper. Do you think this is a good idea?【重复复2025年9月17线下原题】

  Sample Answer

Well, personally I do not think this is a good idea.

The primary reason is that many students are not interested in learning these skills and some of them don't really need such skills in their future study. So, if you force them to learn something they have no interest in, they won’t stay motivated and dedicated. And they will even treat assignments and classes as a chore and nuisance. They won’t put their hearts into it and just end up wasting a lot of time. And in worst case scenario, the whole situation would even backfire.

Besides, I think students’ time and energy are limited and many freshmen have a hard time adapting to their life. If they have to fit another thing into their already hectic schedule, it may negatively affect their performance on other important courses and activities. That’s the reason why I don’t think forcing students to learn is a good idea.

Well, I believe it’s essential for students to visit universities before making a final decision.

The primary reason is that by touring the campus, students can truly experience the university's atmosphere, academic culture, and daily living environment. This firsthand impression helps them determine whether they’ll feel comfortable and motivated studying there. Having their families accompany them allows for valuable outside perspectives and emotional support, which can lead to a more informed decision.

Besides, visiting different campuses can inspire students. Seeing facilities, interacting with current students, and comparing various institutions often helps clarify their academic and career goals. This clarity can boost their motivation to work harder during the application process and in their future studies.

So, overall, campus visits are highly beneficial both personally and academically.

  TASK 2

  No More Jazz Choir

Currently, the university has a jazz choir, a group of students who meet to sing jazz music and give concerts. However, starting next year the jazz choir will be discontinued, and will no longer exist. The primary reason for ending the jazz choir, according to the director, is that student interest in participating has been low, and it has been difficult to find enough student singers to fill the jazz choir. He mentioned that there will still be an opportunity for students to participate in a singing group, since the university also has another choir that performs concerts on campus, so students can participate in the other choir instead.
