  TASK 1

Some professors allow students who have not done well on graded assignments during a course to do additional assignments in order to improve their overall course grade. Do you think this is a good idea?【重复2023年7月23日;2023.5.10, 2021.8.29线下原题】

  Sample Answer

Well, I don’t think this is a good idea.

Because it’s not fair for the students who work hard and get better grades. Obviously, the students who fail don’t take the courses seriously. They don’t spend much time previewing the study materials and reviewing the class notes like the other students do. And if they can improve their grades by doing something else, those hard-working students would not feel motivated to study anymore.

In addition, the additional assignments would also create difficulties and obligations for professors, since they have to put in extra time and energy designing new assignments and grading them. It would just take up too much of their time. And it just wouldn’t be fair for professors either.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?Students should have a one-year vacation before they attend universities.【

Well, from my perspective, students should definitely take the year off before entering college. The main reason is because this gap year is a great chance for students to take a break from their heavy workload. What I mean is, high schoolers in China are usually so stressed out due to assignments, and exams. They can take a long break to recharge for college life by traveling, or even staying at home doing nothing. Another reason is that students can actually adapt to their college life better after taking a year off. That is to say, by getting working experiences from doing part-time jobs and internships, students can figure out their career goals. Once they are clear about what they want to become after graduate, students will definitely have a better academic performance during their college years.

Some people think it is important to wear in a fashionable way, others think it is unnecessary to wear fashionable, which do you prefer and why?【

  Sample Answer

Well, I don’t think it’s necessary to wear fashionable clothing.

First of all, fashionable items can be really expensive because many of them are sold by luxury brands. The stylish jeans and sneakers would definitely put a strain on my tight budget. I don’t see the point of wasting so much money on it. For me, comfort always comes first.

Besides, it’s really time-consuming to keep up with the trends. I mean fashion is coming and going at an increasing rate. It’s a never-ending chase. Some clothes that were trending six months ago maybe now considered outdated. So if you wanna follow fashion trends, you are gonna have to keep buying new clothes and that can be really exhausting.

Your university is considering a policy in which professors would only be eligible for promotions and salary increases if they receive positive evaluations from students regarding their teaching. Do you agree with this policy? Use specific examples and details to explain why or why not.【重复2020年11月29日线下原题】

  Sample Answer

To be honest, I don’t really think it is realistic. I understand that professors’ academic reputation is essential for their career development, but students’ evaluations are not always reliable. I mean, students could be giving inaccurate reviews because they are in a rush to the next class or they simply don’t want to spend too much time thinking. Besides, there is more than one aspect where professors should be assessed, the quality of their research projects, how much work they have done in tutoring students, etc. We can’t eliminate the possibility when some professors only focus on pleasing students in exchange for good reviews.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All high school students should have basic economics class.【

  Sample Answer

Well, I don't think taking a basic economics class should be required for all high school students.

The primary reason is that many students are not that interested in economics. When students are forced to learn something they are not interested in, they won’t stay motivated and dedicated. They’ll even treat the assignments and classes as a chore and nuisance. So eventually they’ll end up having a poor performance or learning nothing at all.

Also, economics can be quite challenging and all the assignments and exams might take up a lot of their time, which means students may find it hard to focus on courses or activities that are more important to them. Since most of the students are already under tremendous amount of academic pressure, they shouldn’t be burdened with one more course. That’s why I disagree with the statement.

  TASK 2

  New Housing for Faculty

The university is planning to create some faculty housing on campus by converting Randall Dormitory, which is currently used for student housing, into faculty apartments. Beginning next year, students will no longer be housed in Randall Dormitory, and students who would have been assigned to live there will be placed in other dormitories on campus instead. "There is currently no housing on campus for faculty members, said Dean of Faculty Katherine Smith “so making this new housing available will provide an opportunity for professors who wish to live close to their workplace.”

  1.因为公告可能涉及他所住的宿舍变动,该宿舍地理位置对学生很优越,紧邻自助餐厅和学生中心,方便学生使用;

  TASK 3

  Outcome Dependency

People's first impressions of another person may be influenced by whether they need to depend on that person to help them achieve a particular goal. When people are dependent on another person to achieve a goal, or outcome the situation is known as outcome dependency. When people perceive their success as being dependent on another person, they tend to have a favorable initial impression of that person. in other words, the effect of outcome dependency is that people perceive a new acquaintance as having traits that will be helpful in achieving a desired goal.

定义:间作(intercropping)是一种在同一地块、同一生长季内,按一定行距、株距或带状排列,同时种植两种或两种以上作物的栽培方式(simultaneous cultivation of two or more crop species in the same field during the same growing season)。

  TASK 4

Using the examples of the cactus and the yucca, explain two adaptations desert plants have for a windy environment.
