Doctor Achebe:Sometimes filmmakers adapt movies from well-known books. This raises an interesting question: when a movie is based on a book, should people read the book before watching the movie, or should they wait until after they have seen the film? l'd like you to share your opinion.

范文:
While conventional wisdom often suggests reading the book first, I firmly believe that watching the film before reading the original text provides a more dynamic and enriching overall experience. This sequence allows the viewer to appreciate the cinematic interpretation as a standalone work of art before deepening their understanding through the novel's inherent depth and nuance. The primary advantage of watching the film first is the preservation of narrative suspense and visual surprise. A film's power often lies in its cinematography, casting, and directorial vision. Experiencing these elements without preconceived notions allows for a purer, more immediate emotional impact. For instance, witnessing the shocking visual reveal of the Great Hall in Harry Potter or the tense atmosphere of the Reaping in The Hunger Games carries a visceral weight that is inevitably diminished if one has already meticulously constructed these scenes in their mind. This approach lets the film serve as a compelling visual blueprint, making the subsequent literary journey one of discovery rather than comparison. Furthermore, reading the book afterward transforms the experience into an act of deep exploration, where the reader uncovers the layers of complexity that a two-hour film must necessarily omit. Novels can delve into a character's internal monologue, elaborate on intricate subplots, and explore thematic richness that film cannot feasibly include. After watching the film adaptation of Dune, for example, reading Frank Herbert's masterpiece allows one to appreciate the political and ecological nuances and the characters' intricate motivations that the movie could only hint at. The book becomes a rewarding "director's cut" of the story, enriching the world rather than being critiqued for what it failed to visualize. Admittedly, reading the book first provides a benchmark for fidelity. However, this often leads to a "comparison trap," where the viewer focuses on what was cut or altered rather than engaging with the film's unique artistic merits. By reversing the sequence, one can enjoy two distinct, yet complementary, interpretations of the same story. In conclusion, the "movie-first" approach offers the best of both worlds: the thrilling, untainted spectacle of cinema followed by the satisfying, in-depth immersion of literature. This method fosters a more appreciative and layered engagement with the narrative, maximizing the value derived from both mediums.

Doctor Achebe:This week we are talking about how different cities choose to either preserve or replace older, historic buildings. Some cities have strict rules about preserving older buildings and homes, especially those with historic architecture, Others tend to encourage new construction to replace structures that are aging and decaying. Should cities try to save historic buildings or replace them with more modern ones?
Kelly:I think the preservation of old historic buildings involves a lot of problems, especially in densely populated cities.in modern cities, land is very valuable, and old buildings just do not provide as much living and working space as modern high-rise buildings. Also, they were not built to modern standards, so they may waste energy through inefficient heating and cooling.
Paul:It's important to preserve historic buildings. Keeping original architecture helps preserve a city's culture. Even on the practical side, most big cities get an economic benefit from tourism, and historic buildings like hotels and theaters are big attractions. Who wants to visit a city where all the buildings are glass and steel and look like buildings in every other city?

主题:whether real Richard Ill did in fact have his nephews killed | |
First, Richard had a strong motive to kill his nephews. The nephews were the sons of the previous king, Edward IV, who had died. They, not Richard were next in line to become king. Richards desire to be king was well known; but he could become king only if the nephews were removed. Just that happened. Shortly after Richard was appointed as the boys guardian, they disappeared, never to be seen again. With his access to the children, Richard could have easily arranged to have them murdered and so achieve his ambition to become king. | First. That's because Richard's nephew stood in his way, doesn't mean that Richard had to kill them to become king himself. Richard used a different strategy to remove them as his competitors. He persuaded a law court to declare that the boy's parents had never been legally married. When their parents' marriage was no longer recognized by the law, the children became illegitimate. Which meant that they lost their right to become kings. Since they were no longer obstacles to Richard's becoming king himself. He had no reason to harm them. |
Second, it was not only Shakespeare who took the view that Richard was guilty. Most writers at the time maintained that Richard Ill plotted his nephews' disappearance. Foremost among these writers was the famous historian Sir Thomas More. In his History of King Richard the third, More stated that it was ascertained that Richard had ordered the deaths of his nephews. | Second, we have to be skeptical of the claims of the writers who accused Richard, the third of murder. Most of them were not independent observers, but were associated with Richard's enemies, the tutor family. The tutors rebelled against Richard and removed him from the throne so they could become England's royal family. They wanted to accuse Richard of a murder because it justified their own takeover of the kingdom. Now, Thomas Moore and Williams Shakespeare. Two authors who wrote that Richard was guilty of the murders were both supported by the tutors. So the historical accuracy of what they wrote about Richard should not be taken for granted. |
Third, there is even physical evidence supporting the view that the boys were killed while in Richard's care. In the 1600s, two skeletons were found at the Tower of London-the place where Richard had the nephews housed. These skeletons belonged to children approximately the same age as Richard's nephews when they disappeared. |
Third, the skeletons found in the tower of London. Actually, the likelihood that the skeletons belong to Richard's nephews is quite small. It's impossible to establish the age of the children accurately from the skeletons, and it's even impossible to tell whether they were boys or girls. Families with children had lived in the tower of London for hundreds of years before the sixteen hundreds. Many of those children had died there, and the skeletons in question could belong to any of them. |

Doctor Achebe:In our discussion this week, we are going to discuss the subject of course selection during high school. As we all know, education plays a crucial role in shaping our future. Choosing the right courses can be challenging given the variety of options, but there are certainly key courses that could be more beneficial. As students in the secondary school stage, or in high school, which courses do you think are the most important and should be made compulsory? And why do you think so?
Kelly:In my opinion, math should be a compulsory course in high school. Math is not just about numbers and equations, it's beneficial for students' future financial planning and travel arrangements. In other words, math equips students with critical skills that they can apply in real-life situations, from managing personal finances to planning efficient travel routes.
Paul:I would argue that biology should be made compulsory. Biology is very commonly used. Without knowledge of biology, students might not even know how to use medications. Studying biology helps us with everyday things, like understanding basic health care and making good choices about our environment.
